Simon Sadler: Art History Spring Lecture

The Whole Earth as a Public Sphere: design discourse and ecological politics in the long 1970s This lecture proposes that the famous countercultural directory, the Whole Earth Catalog, was an architecture that modeled an aesthetic of the ?whole.? In this way the Whole Earth Catalog promoted design as politics by other means, and it posited a counter-history and counter-practice of design that still bears on the problematic relationship between agency, ecology, and architecture. Simon Sadler is Professor of Architectural and Urban History at the University of California, Davis.
