Ruptura, Bernardo Velez

To create Ruptura I began with 8 copies of my own birth certificate. I then cut out pieces of the documents that, when arranged together, allude to the geography of the Rio Grande, which separates the United States and Mexico. I then framed each of the documents and manually cracked the glass that shielded them.

Through this work I hope to highlight issues of borders and belonging. What value does our nation grant a single document, and how is that put in crisis through its replication? Does being a natural-born citizen translate to full membership in American society? What does it mean to be born on land that was once Mexico, or that was once not colonized? How natural or artificial are these borders? How natural or artificial is their impact?
