Johanna Gustin is a director and writer from New York. She earned her BA in English and German from Smith College, graduating cum laude, before moving to Germany as a Fulbright Fellow. She pursued film and cultural studies and completed an MA in American Studies at the University of Hamburg with her thesis Here Come The Brides: Homosocial Female Relationships in Contemporary Wedding Comedies. After working for Viacom and Yahoo, Johanna shifted to filmmaking, directing music videos, sketch comedy, and short films. Her short documentary Dicks That I Like screened at over 20 festivals, including Slamdance, Palm Springs International ShortFest, and the Rhode Island International Film Festival, and had its online premiere as a Vimeo Staff Pick. Johanna’s work focuses on gender, friendship, homosociality, and genre. She believes in approaching subjects with empathy and humor.
