Helen Hood Scheer

Documentary Film and Video

About

Born and raised in Venice, California, Helen Hood Scheer graduated from U.C. Santa Cruz with a highest honors BA in American Studies and promptly started interning on a documentary for National Geographic.  Armed with on-the-job training, Helen became a producer of historical and contemporary non-fiction television programs broadcast on A&E, HBO, and PBS before making her directorial debut with JUMP!––an award-winning documentary feature film about competitive jump rope that follows five teams of kids as they pursue their dream of becoming world champions (jumpmovie.com).  JUMP! premiered at the Los Angeles Film Festival, was acquired by Showtime, and optioned for fictionalization.  Scholastic Media created a 3-minute version of the film for distribution to under-performing schools nationwide and Helen is self-distributing DVDs.  Fascinated by uncommon real-life stories, she believes in the power of long- and short-form documentary media to bridge gaps and bring people together.  Helen aims to become a teacher of documentary filmmaking while continuing to create new content.
