Digital Media Artist

The Department of Art & Art History at Stanford University seeks applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Digital Media Art Practice. The term of appointment is expected to begin on September 1, 2024.

Applicants should have a robust contemporary digital media studio practice, demonstrated through an accomplished exhibition or public performance record and an active presence and reputation in the field. An MFA or terminal degree in a related field and prior university level teaching experience are required. The ideal candidate will bring to Stanford a vigorous and evolving artistic research program that will shape current discussions of the aesthetics and politics of digital media, and attract graduate students of the highest caliber.

We are looking for an artist whose work actively and critically addresses contemporary issues, with attention to how these are engaged with technological systems (algorithmic and computational processes, data gathering, networks, etc.). Areas of media emphasis might include socially engaged media and making practices, generative art, moving imagery, virtual and augmented reality, installation art, or performance. We especially welcome applicants with experimental and hybrid practices that create productive connections between emerging and traditional disciplines.

Candidates should be experienced, accomplished instructors, with expertise informed by the aesthetic and critical discourses of art practice, art history, and media studies, and who are committed to developing innovative and inclusive pedagogy and curriculum in the area of digital media at both the undergraduate and graduate level. As a component of curriculum development, this candidate will work closely with a studio lab manager to establish and maintain state-of-the-art teaching facilities in their curricular area. Our MFA program draws students from all disciplines, and the successful candidate will be comfortable advising and working with students across a wide variety of mediums and practices.

As an R1 research university, Stanford offers resources to support artistic practice, and opportunities to expand the candidate’s research through engagement with other faculty, students and collaborative initiatives across a variety of campus departments and centers. The successful candidate will be interested in participating in the multi-disciplinary community of artists, documentary filmmakers, and scholars in the Department of Art & Art History and with the wider community of Stanford University.

Candidates should apply through FSAT and submit:

  • an introductory letter detailing their current artistic research and teaching objectives
  • a curriculum vitae (including an exhibition history)
  • links to a selection of 5-10 works from a current portfolio
