The Department of Art & Art History at Stanford University presents Chapel, on view from July 11 to August 20, 2017 with a reception on Thursday, July 13, from 4-6 PM, at the Coulter Art Gallery.
Chapel is a video and sound installation by Lora Webb and Danny Smith. The installation is composed of footage of the Calera Chapel in Calera, Texas taken over the course of a single day. In the Coulter Art Gallery, the installation will consist of five screens displaying looped films of the chapel’s adobe façade.
Both scholars of medieval architecture, Webb and Smith created Chapel as an alternative means of exploring architectural space. Long-duration films display the interaction of architecture and environment from sunrise to sunset. Ambient sound recordings of the natural environment at the chapel, played in a space mimicking the building’s interior, convey the importance of other senses in perceiving architectural space.
Chapel is supported by the Pauline Brown Fund for Advanced Research in American Art, and the Department of Art and Art History.
VISITOR INFORMATION: The Coulter Art Gallery is located at 355 Roth Way on Stanford's campus. Parking is free after 4 PM weekdays, and all day on weekends. Entry is free of charge and open to the public - all are encouraged to attend!
