The Department of Art & Art History presents, Knock Before Entering, the Undergraduate Honor's Thesis Exhibition, on view, April 17-May 6, 2018 with refreshments on Thursday, April 19, from 4-6PM.
As the culmination of the yearlong Honors Thesis program in Art Practice, Knock Before Entering presents the work of Rosie Chiiks, Stella Io, Tori Parrish, and Xyro Phux. These exceptional emerging artists’ work shows distinct styles, focused exploration, and inventive art forms.
To explore the ways in which performance and identity interact, as well as the challenges and opportunities involved in creating new identities, this artist constructed and embodied three different personas Rosie Chiiks, Stella Io, and Xyro Phux. Probing the limits of authorship, the artist addresses the question “could two different people produce the same work?” While each of the persona’s personality and artistic interests were based on some major aspect of the artist, they also each have a unique personality, set of interests, aesthetic, social presence, and body of artwork.
Tori Parrish combines gestures of abstract and figurative painting in an investigation of identity. Exploring the self, presentation, and the intimacy of painting the figure, she plays with de- and reconstruction, appearance and disappearance, and the yonic composition. Primarily using her own body as reference, Parrish severs figures and pieces them back together on color fields, patterned projections, and ambiguous spaces. Drawing on colors and textures that are familiar to her, she integrates aspects of her North Carolinian, queer, and femme identities.
These students worked closely with faculty, graduate student mentors, and staff in the Art Department to realize their projects and this exhibition. They met throughout the year for group critiques with visiting artists from the Bay Area and professors in the Art Department. Special thanks to their advisors Terry Berlier, Enrique Chagoya, Gail Wight, and Xiaoze Xie for their support.
