Studio Lecture: Julie Myers
People and Places: a peripatetic practice A chance encounter on a park bench, a found object, a conversation over a cup of coffee, all become part a rich narrative thread in the exploration of a new place. Julie Myers lives and works in London. Her practice draws upon research methods associated with ethnography, but looks for popular, accessible, everyday ways people make sense of their environment. Using technology as a way of mediating social interactions, the work is concerned with space and place, networked systems, collective knowledge, and shared experience. Sometimes recording just a brief moment captured between strangers and at other times building a relationship with multiple participants over a sustained period of time. She uses drawing, video, mobile technologies, web and interactive formats to document and present her work. Previous work has been commissioned by Arts Council England, NESTA, The BFI, The Institute of Contemporary Art, The British Council, AHRC and the National Portrait Gallery, London, UK. Industrial collaborators include, Adobe Systems, USA, British Telecom, UK and Philips Multi Media, FR. For information about Julie Myers and her work, go to http://www.juliemyers.org.uk.
