A Screening with Xandra Ibarra

Please join the Bay Area Latinx Art & Activism research workshop this Wednesday, May 29th, at Oshman Hall for a screening and conversation with artist Xandra Ibarra. Ibarra will present a suite of video works and documentation of her performance, Nude Laughing. A brief discussion and Q&A will follow the video screenings.

Xandra Ibarra, who sometimes works under the alias of La Chica Boom, is an Oakland-based artist from the U.S./Mexico border of El Paso/Juarez. Ibarra works across performance, video, and sculpture to address abjection and joy and the borders between proper and improper racialized, gendered, and queer subjects.

Ibarra’s work has featured at The Broad Museum (L.A.), ExTeresa Arte Actual (D.F., Mexico), The Leslie-Lohman Museum (NYC), ONE Archives (L.A.), and the Anderson Collection (Stanford), to name a few. She is currently a U.C. President’s Post-Doctoral Fellow, a Eureka Fellow, and a Lucas Visual Arts Fellow. She is the recipient of the Creative Capital Award, the Queer Art Prize for Recent Work, the Art Matters Grant, the Eisner Film and Video Prize, and the Franklin Furnace Performance and Variable Media Award, among others. Her work has appeared in Artforum, Frieze, Hyperallergic, Huffington Post, ArtNews, and various national and international academic publications and books.
