Opening Reception: Photography Teaches: Artists from the Bay Area Academy

The Department of Art & Art History presents Photography Teaches: Artists from the Bay Area Academy, on view August 1–30, 2019, at the Coulter Art Gallery. Join us for the opening reception on Thursday, August 1, 4–6 pm.

This exhibition is the second annual showcase of work by Bay Area photographers who also teach photography at various schools in the region. Photographs by each artist were selected to display a sample of their respective visions, to reveal a significant connectivity–ranging from kindred sensibility to creative counterpoint–between the subjects, themes and aesthetics that interest and engage them, and to put into perspective their shared commitment to living and working in the Bay Area as a uniquely inspirational place of nature, history and community.

The idea behind the exhibition is to highlight how artistic and pedagogical practices seamlessly coexist in animating the points of view adopted by these photographers. Their bodies of work make manifest the Bay Area's tradition of photographic exchange between generations of teachers and students, mentors and apprentices, each with their own personal eye, skill set and method. The contributions in this show offer a celebration of their powerful legacy and of the vibrant environment that continues to nurture their creative expression of talent and generous educational impetus.
