Nat Turner's Bible: A Conversation between Thavolia Glymph and Kevin Quashie

The Department of Art and Art History's Weintz Art Lecture Series presents Nat Turner’s Bible: A Conversation between Thavolia Glymph and Kevin Quashie.

Join us for a conversation between two renowned scholars, one from English and one from History, about one of the most important artifacts in the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

Thavolia Glymph is professor of history and law at Duke University and faculty research scholar in the Duke Population Research Institute (DuPRI). She is the author of Out of the House of Bondage: The Transformation of the Plantation Household (Cambridge University Press, 2008), co-winner of the Philip Taft Book Prize and a finalist for the Frederick Douglass Book Prize; The Women’s Fight: The Civil War’s Battles for Home, Freedom, and Nation (University of North Carolina Press, 2020), a Lincoln Prize finalist; and co-editor of two volumes of the prize-winning series, Freedom: A Documentary History of Emancipation, 1861-1867 (Cambridge University Press).

Kevin Quashie is a professor in the Department of English at Brown University where he teaches black literary and cultural theory, black feminisms, and aesthetics. He is the author or editor of four books, most recently The Sovereignty of Quiet: Beyond Resistance in Black Culture (2012) and Black Aliveness, or A Poetics of Being (2021). His studying now is organized by the phrase "a book of black ideas."

Please register in advance.

This lecture series is made possible by a generous grant from Fred Weintz and Rosemary Weintz
