"Interrupted University: from past to present" Artist Talk: Clarence Morgan

Clarence Morgan's lecture will address the trajectory of his studio practice as a painter from figurative inclinations to more recent abstract paintings, drawings and prints produced over a 30 year period. Artist Statement: The continued embrace of drawing is actually a return to a practice that I have come to accept as the cornerstone of my artistic purpose. Drawing is not only the foundation of painting from my perspective but it also symbolizes the prospect of a certain type of visceral intelligence. This astuteness is made palpable through disciplined execution and repetition of form. Drawing exists as an authentic record of process and the experience of thought itself. It is drawing that underscores studio practice no matter if the end result is a painting, print, sculpture, or collage. The fullness of whatever ideas, if any, which might be revealed in my work, can be detected in the way drawing makes itself evident as a vehicle of thought. Thus, I am interested in pursuing the kind of collective thinking and sustained application of thought that unfolds meticulously and humbly over time.
