Black One Shot: Blackness and Art Criticism

Created and edited by Lisa Uddin and Michael Boyce Gillespie, Black One Shot (b.O.s.) is an ongoing online art criticism series on ASAP/J that is committed to the art of blackness. With work by scholars, critics, and curators at 1000 words a pop, the pieces divest from academic respectability to inhabit the speculative, ambivalent, irreconcilable ways of black forms. Their talk will discuss the object attachment conceit of the series and its movement through the channels and frequencies of blackness.

Lisa Uddin is associate professor of art history and visual culture studies at Whitman College. Her work addresses racialization in post 1960s American art, urbanism, and the environment. She is author of Zoo Renewal: White Flight and the Animal Ghetto (University of Minnesota Press, 2015), and has recently written on Black aesthetic practices and California’s built environment for ASAP/J, Race and Modern Architecture: A Critical History from the Enlightenment to the Present (University of Pittsburgh Press, 2020), and Design Radicals: Spaces of Bay Area Counterculture (University of Minnesota Press, 2021). 

Michael Boyce Gillespie is associate professor of film at The City College of New York and the Graduate Center, CUNY. His work focuses on Black visual and expressive culture, film theory, visual historiography, music, and contemporary art. He is author of Film Blackness: American Cinema and the Idea of Black Film (Duke University Press, 2016). His recent work has appeared in ASAP/J, Black Light: A Retrospective of International Black Cinema, Flash Art, Unwatchable, and Film Quarterly.
