Berkeley/Stanford Symposium: Not at Home

The inaugural Berkeley/Stanford Symposium will be held at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) on April 8, 2017. Not at Home is an opportunity to discuss how visual material has registered changing relations to home over time. Papers, panels, and performance pieces speak to how home and its opposites – displacement, estrangement, voyage, or exile – manifest in visual expression and material culture throughout history.

Delighted to announce, keynote will be Finbarr Barry Flood, William R. Kenan Jr. Professor of the Humanities, Institute of Fine Arts and College of Arts and Sciences, New York University.

The Berkeley/Stanford Symposium is a new annual gathering of emerging voices in the arts. Organized collaboratively by graduate students in Art History at both Stanford and UC Berkeley, the symposia are open to graduate students in all fields as well as young artists, museum professionals, writers, and other interested parties. Symposia will be held at locations around the Bay Area and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) has generously offered to host in both 2017 as well as 2018.

The first annual Berkeley/Stanford Symposium has been generously co-sponsored by: The Department of Art and Art History, Stanford University, The Department of Art History, UC Berkeley, The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The Department of American Studies, Stanford University, The Department of Theatre and Performance Studies, Stanford University, The Department of Classics, Stanford University, The Department of French and Italian, Stanford University, The Office of the Associate Dean for the Advancement of the Arts, Stanford University.
